To turn this vision into reality, the GREENVERSITY project team is thrilled to announce a major project milestone: the official release of the GREENVERSITY PATHWAY: an accrediation protocol aligned with our CORE Framework.
This comprehensive protocol serves as an operational guide for quality assurance bodies, university leaders and educators across Europe. It details exactly how to transition sustainability from an optional elective into the accredited core of university degree programmes.
Why the GREENVERSITY Pathway is Essential
While the demand for “green skills” is surging across startups, corporate sectors, public governance and higher education systems have historically lacked standardised frameworks to evaluate and certify these competences.
The GREENVERSITY PATHWAY directly addresses this challenge:
- Standardisation Across Europe: It translates the European Commission’s GreenComp framework into operational quality metrics that align with national accreditation agencies across Europe—including AVAP (Spain), FINEEC (Finland), HCERES (France), ARACIS (Romania), and A3ES (Portugal).
- Beyond Theory: Instead of focusing solely on environmental knowledge, the PATHWAY measures practical skills and ethical attitudes—such as systems thinking, adaptability, and political agency.
- Systemic Impact: By embedding sustainability directly into the formal criteria for initial degree verification (ex-ante) and periodic re-accreditation (ex-post), the protocol ensures long-term institutional change.
How the PATHWAY Operates: A Clear, Actionable Model
The Pathway report outlines a clear, step-by-step structure for university course designers and external evaluators:
- Curriculum Mapping: A degree programme must embed at least 8 of the 12 GreenComp competences, ensuring that all four key competence areas (Embodying Values, Embracing Complexity, Envisioning Futures, Acting for Sustainability) are covered.
- Cross-Disciplinary Integration: Each chosen competence must be assessed across at least two mandatory subjects, proving that sustainability is treated as an interdisciplinary mindset rather than a single isolated subject.
- The Traffic-Light Assessment System: Student learning outcomes are evaluated across Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes using a transparent metric:
- 🔴 Red (0 points)
- 🟡 Yellow (1 point)
- 🟢 Green (2 points)
- The “Green Stamp”: Students who achieve a minimum score of 16 out of 32 points (with a maximum allowance of three red lights) earn an official Green Stamp recognition embedded within their European Diploma Supplement.
Connecting the PATHWAY to the GREENVERSITY CORE Framework
A central aspect of our work has been linking this new protocol directly to our previously launched GREENVERSITY CORE Framework.
The relationship between the two documents forms a complete ecosystem:
- The CORE Framework is the Content Blueprint: It defines what students need to learn. It breaks down the high-level European GreenComp framework into measurable, higher-education-specific learning outcomes across academic disciplines.
- The PATHWAY Protocol is the Operational Engine: It provides the how. It equips university leadership, degree coordinators and accreditation agencies with the administrative tools, evaluation rubrics and legal processes required to formally verify, monitor and accredit those learning outcomes.
Without the CORE, the PATHWAY would lack academic substance; without the PATHWAY, the CORE would remain a theoretical guide rather than an accredited European standard.
